How to Plan a Good Hen's Night

Who: Beauty and Lace
Date: November 2007

Dear Readers,

This month I asked the fabulous owner, Sucheta, of www.hens.com.au her tips on: How to Plan a Good Hen's Night.

How do I choose where we should we have the hen’s night?

Firstly consider the type of Hen you are organizing the night for. No point in organizing a cruise with strippers if you know your Hen will cringe with embarrassment the whole night!
In terms of location a central destination is always a good idea so there are no problems with directions or transport. Hens after a few champagnes tend to wander slightly so the less moving around the better!!!

What are some classier options for girl’s who don’t want strippers and alcohol?

Some of the most popular new top class activities include:

- A glamorous weekend away at a boutique hotel with lots of pampering. Try a hotel with its own day spa attached to the property for the ultimate luxury. Some cottages for hire also have spas and you can hire in a local massage therapist for the afternoon.

- High Tea – think three tier cake stands and little sandwiches for a sophisticated Hens Night. There are lots of fab bars and restaurants that do this now.

- Cocktail classes are starting to crop up too. This is a great way to have some fun and learn a few tricks and have the bar to yourself for a bit. Then best of all you get to enjoy the results of your lesson!

- Make Up And Pamper Parties – This is great idea for some girly bonding. And it’s all in the one place so it’s perfect. Organize a therapist to come to your venue and spend the evening knee deep in manicures, facemasks and massages.

- An Evening with A Tarot Card Reader – My current fave and making me want to have another Hen’s night myself! Find a reputable tarot card reader to join you and the girls for an evening of readings and predictions.

What does a traditional hen’s night involve?

Hen’s Nights are becoming less and less traditional in their nature, because of all the great and different things to do now, but the main essence of the evening should always be the bride to be and her enjoyment and a good time with her best girlfriends. It’s her opportunity to relax and take a break from all of the stress and drama that goes hand in hand with planning a wedding. Time out with her girls is the perfect recipe!

Who pays for the Hen’s Night?

The general rule of thumb is that the girls attending the Hen’s Night pay for themselves and the bride to be. The bride to be has the huge expense of the upcoming wedding and everything that entails so a great opportunity to treat her.

Do I invite her mother and mother in law?

I would always recommend speaking to the bride to be before inviting her Mother or Mother in law! It really does depend on the relationship the girl has with them and whether she will be able to relax and enjoy herself in their presence!

What activities do you recommend?

One fun activity is a quiz to see how well the bride knows her husband to be and vice versa. Email the groom before the Hen’s Night with a list of questions similar to the ones on the movie Green Card! i.e. Favourite Food, Perfume/Aftershave, Film, Most embarrassing experience etc or How they met?
Then at the Hen’s Night ask the girl the questions in front of the gang and see how well she knows her hubby to be!
We also do a beautiful personalized Hen’s Book which documents the night. Everyone writes lovely messages and you can stick in photos and mementoes etc. Something the hen can keep for ever.

How far before the wedding should we have the hen’s night?

Generally a couple of weeks before the wedding is a good idea. This gives the bride to be some time out before the big day to relax and have fun. Definitely would not recommend the night before the wedding … a hung over bride with bags under her eyes and dull, de-hydrated skin is not a good look!
