I Want Her Job! Sucheta Kotwal - Director of Hens.com.au

Who: 9-5 Magazine
Date: February 2008

What does your job involve?

Everything! Sales, creative, IT, marketing, design. It’s a very hands-on job, which is great as it is never boring. Most importantly, my job is to source as many fantastic ideas as I can for hens’ nights.

What’s a 9 to 5 day like for you?

The joy of email means work hours can start very early and end very late. A day can entail meetings with clients, marketing sessions and uploading content onto the website. Having said that, it’s also possible to pop out and do a yoga class or head to the beach for a swim during the middle of the day – a definite perk of working for yourself.

Why hens’ nights?

When planning my own hens’ night, I was amazed at how difficult it was to find activities for a classy night. I felt that a directory of options and ideas for hens’ nights was essential. My girlfriends agreed with me so I decided to give it a go.

Best and worst parts of the job?

I love sourcing new activities and ideas for hens' parties. It’s absolutely the best part of my job. Helping small businesses grow through the success and response of advertising on Hens.com.au is also very rewarding. Worst bits? Paperwork and accounts are always a chore.

Your favourite wedding gown designers?

Collette Dinnigan (I wore one of her gowns for my own wedding), Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera. I just love that real old Hollywood feminine glamour.

Had any famous hen clients?

Monique Wright, a presenter on Sunrise, organised her friend’s hens’ night with us. We’ve also had Zoe Naylor (McLeod’s Daughters), Kate Mac (2DAY FM) and Kristy Warner (NOVA969).

What sort of person suits this job?

You need to be not only self sufficient but flexible to work in this role. You can find yourself answering phones in the morning, invoicing at lunch and speaking to magazine editors in the afternoon. You really need to be able to roll with it and adapt.

Any advice to them?

Do it! There are no words that can describe the feeling that you get when your “little idea” becomes a big success.
